Why it matters
The paper clip is an elegant pressure-and-friction tool: one piece of wire holds papers without puncturing them.
How it works
The looped wire creates spring tension. Paper slides between the loops, and the wire presses back just enough to hold sheets together.

- Many clip designs existed, but the familiar Gem-style loop became dominant because it was cheap, smooth, and reusable.
- The shape works because it spreads pressure over paper rather than concentrating it like a pin.
